Name In Trend: Liam

The name Liam is of Old German origin and means "helmet" or "protection". Whilst it is a name in it's own right, it can also be a nickname for William, which might explain why it's been trending so quickly.

Liam has been a name that has been popping up everywhere, from TV shows like 90210, which features a troubled surfer dude named Liam, to celebrities naming their kids Liam. Let's check out just how far this name has come in the popularity ranking:

Liam first debuted in the 1960's, in the 900s region. By the year 2000, it was at #140. In 2011, it zoomed up 15 spots to #15, which is a pretty impressive climb considering we're in the top20 and talking about big numbers.
There just seems to be no stopping this name, and with William ranking at #3 in 2011, with several of them going by Liam, then the true popularity of this name is much bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, Liam ranks higher than William, since parents are loving short names for their sons.

Alternative spellings of this name, I could only find one: Lyam.

Similar names are: Lem, Lemmie, Ryan, Noam, Lee, Rowan, Kian, Kyan.
