So I recently watched the movie Pacific Rim, which reminded me of how much I love the name Raleigh. That movie featured some pretty cool names, for example Raleigh's brother is named Yancy, which also caught my eye, so if you enjoy action flicks mixed with a dose of unique names, check the movie out.
Raleigh is of old english origin and it has two different meanings that I found: "roe deer's meadow" and "from the red field". There is definitely a nature connection in both, so if you like nature names this one is a great choice. It can also be a place name, because it's the capital of North Carolina, and it could definitely fit in with the place name trend going on lately with names like Princeton, Camden, Brooklyn, etc.
The impression I get from Raleigh is of a southern guy, it has some cowboy appeal imo, but it strangely sounds quite elegant and classy at the same time, a gentleman's name. Although it could work on girls too I guess, I'm not a fan - I feel it would get lost in a sea of tacky poorly spelled -leigh ending names that have no history to them and would make a great name like Raleigh look cheap.
I think this name would make a great alternative to popular soundalike names such as Riley, Rylan, Bradley, so if you like the sound of those names but not their widespread usage, Raleigh would make a fantastic replacement. The name only ever charted on the SSA ranking for boys, and peaked at #357 in 1891, dropping off the top 1000 in 1965, never to be heard from again. I feel it's very underrated and I'm surprised it has yet to take off. I wonder if the movie Pacific Rim might give it boost? It would be deserved, for sure.
What are your thoughts on Raleigh? Yay? Nay? For me, it's a definite "yay" and would make a great name for a son.
